Hollywood legend Joanne Woodward is nearing her final days after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease according to reports by the Associated Press. The 84-year-old film legend and widow of actor, the late Paul Newman's deteriorating health issues became more evident and concerning for friends and fans after Woodward was a no show recently at a scheduled appearance a the Westport Country Playhouse in Connecticut.
Taking Woodward's place was her daughter Clea Newman. It was revealed that soon after the event started and it was evident that Joanne was unable to attend that friends and fans began realizing that Woodward's health was the cause of her absence. The Associated Press also revealed that Woodward is being cared for in her home in Westport by her daughter Melissa.Woodward is best known for long Hollywood film career and her Oscar win for her role in the 1957 film “The Three Faces of Eve."
Joanne, who is ravaged by Alzheimer’s disease, hasn’t been seen at public events since early 2013.Woodward married Newman in 1958 and share three daughters, Nell Newman, Melissa Newman, Claire Olivia Newman. I always remember Paul Newman's answer to a question about ever cheating on his wife: "Why go out for a hamburger when you have steak at home?". That was a love match if there ever was one.

DeleteJoanne and I are from the same generation, and for me and those my age I think it's fair to say that Paul and Joanne were Bogart and Becall to us, the most celebrated and adored couple in film. I thought Joanne was so very pretty, and graceful, and such a fine actress. I suppose, like most of us, we were in love with her. She was just classically beautiful, and Paul was really one of a kind, who gave us so many fine performances. It is sad indeed to come to the end of that, for all of us. I'm grateful to have been around in those days, and enjoyed all the great films that they gave us. And I am heartbroken to learn that she will soon leave us. Above all others, I would love to have met her, back then, and held her in my arms and told her how much we cared.

ReplyDeleteJoanne is not the only one. Italian actress Monica Vitti, is the same age and seemingly has had Alzheimers for the last 15 years and has not been seen in public for a long time. She was of course the star of those Antonioni classics like L'Avventura and L'Eclisse, defining early 1960s chic, before becoming a popular comedienne in the 60s and 70s, with films like Modesty Blaise. We worry about her too.

And here we are, almost a year on and, as far as I know, Joanne is still with us. Not the Joanne we knew, but still the Joanne her fans love, or so I assume anyway. IMHO it would be most respectful to her to write her obituary áfter her passing, after all, as far as I know both Joanne and Paul were very private people.

I have news for everyone, Gore, along with Marlon Brando, Steve McQueen & many, many more had sampled Newman's "best" & I'm not talking about his salad dressings either! Read Marlon Brando's book in case you need clarification! It was common knowledge in Hollyweird that Paul. Newman was a very prolific "switch hitter"! But, a great actor & a human being too! ReplyDeletePaul Newman actually saved my marriage. I was married briefly at one time and never intended to remarry until my friend, who was a widower, ask me to marry him. I did, but things started to fall apart. I heard Paul answer a question about his marriage, where he said that people don't try of fix things anymore. Mixers,toaster, marriages. Made me think. My husband and I were happy for 21 years until he died of a heart condition.

ReplyDeleteI lived in Westport, CT for many years. When I first moved there, my phone number was "one off" from the Newmans, i.e. 227 instead of 226. As a result, I got a number of phone calls meant for the Newmans, but it wasn't until a lovely lady called Mrs. Carter started calling and actually having conversations with me did I realize that Mrs. Carter was Joanne Woodward's mother. She was in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's at the time and couldn't get that she wasn't calling the Newman's house. We had lovely long chats and she even invited me to tea. I never went since I realized if I really showed up she wouldn't remember having invited me since she never remembered calling me from one time to the next. She was a lovely woman, as is her daughter. I wish Ms. Woodward all the best. They were lovely neighbors in Westport, classy people and talented in their craft. I miss them.

DeleteThis is always sad for me, to see someone I so admire at this final stage of life. All the young actresses I loved not so long ago are now leaving the stage. Angie Dickenson, Joann, others. I remember them in all the radiance of their youth, and beauty. Joann especially, for me, partly because, like her, I am a southerner, always thought she embodied what is best about being "a southern lady." Graceful, full of fire, beautiful. I've always loved Joann, and wish her the best now, and her family. I still see her and Paul together in the Long Hot Summer, when it was all beginning. What a great couple they were.

ReplyDeleteJoanne and Paul were extremely gifted and talented actors. Loved watching them in the movies. It's not often you hear about actors being married for life and I applaud them, great role models. Wish others in Hollywood would take their lead in finding a partner that they love, instead of marrying for money. My father died of Alzheimer's and had it from the age of 63 through till 79 so it can last a long time. Hope they can find a cure for this terrible debilitating disease in my lifetime. Thank you Joanne and Paul for giving us a lifetime of entertainment and supporting the causes of disabled and sick children around the world.
You do know that Paul Newman was married once before, I hope. He left his wife (with three children) to marry Joanne. Her name is Jacqueline Witte, and she was an actress who lived in Beloit. They were married for ten years. In those days, the big studios did not tell you certain secrets,fearing that the fickle public would not accept the fact.

ReplyDeleteI justed watched the the 3 faces of eve. I am a big fan of both. Of course I'm 68 years old. Lol . I'm watching the silver chalice now . I would hate to think someone who would abuse their position to steal from a charity. Mr newman is gone and and hopefully miss Woodward is of sound mine and able to oversee the charity. But history always repeats it self when it comes to greed. I'm just a fan but know from experience that people , even family can be dishonest.

ReplyDeleteIn 1959 I was invited to a party in the Hollywood Hills at the home of Arthur Lowe Jr. Marlon Brando was there as well as John Saxon, Albert Salmi, Beatrice Lilly and so many others. I briefly saw Paul Newman and his fairly new bride at the time, walk across one of the livingrooms arm in arm and they were both barefoot. The love that I saw from them always remained with me.

I wish his dad’s sporting goods store, Newman’s Sporting Goods was still in Cleveland and that it had passed down to relatives.

My husband was in South Florida during the 80's and walked past Paul Newman. He thought to himself: "WOW! What piercing blue, beautiful eyes that man has." Then he realized: "THAT MAN IS PAUL NEWMAN!" My husband was the city manager where Newman was filming something and he was introduced to the star. My husband said he thought Mr. Newman was just a nice, down to earth, humble, regular guy WITH ABSOLUTELY THE MOST BEAUTIFUL EYES and face. :) A TERRIFIC ACTOR! Gone but not forgotten.
