The Red Norvo and Nelson Riddle albums are wonderful, too.

I think Dinah's singing reputation suffered in the '70s, when she sang almost everyday on her talk show. She always had a great love for popular music and it showed in her au courant song selections, which were always enthusiastic and sometimes even inspired, like when she sang Joan Baez's "Diamonds and Rust."

I think the rushed demands of taping at least one 90-minute show a day didn't allow Dinah's singing the care and attention it deserved.

She sounded great when I saw her concert in 1980 and included a good number of pop tunes, in addition to an expected medley of her hits. She rightly gave "Blues in the Night" it's own solo spot but my favorite song she sang that night was her lovely, dreamy and not at all sad encore of "When I Grow Too Old To Dream."

Dinah Shore continued singing at concert venues for pretty much the rest of her life. I belief her last concert was in '93.Jeff Macauleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12411177954006557922noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3224037410105354251.post-31997009131502076862013-10-11T07:39:44.994-07:002013-10-11T07:39:44.994-07:00Without a doubt, Jo Stafford is one of my all-time...Without a doubt, Jo Stafford is one of my all-time favourite singers. Right up there with Jo is Jane Morgan. Both are a joy to listen to and were classically trained. In terms of classical music, my favourite female singer is Elisabeth Schwarzkopf -- especially her version of Richard Strauss' "Four Last Songs" (with George Szell conducting). It's great that you have her autograph. Connee, Alice and Jo are regulars on my playlist.

My top criteria for singers comes from something my dad said when we were listening to a Kate Smith album. He said "Listen. You don't hear the work. She makes it seem so easy. That's the sign of greatness."

Near the end of her life Dinah started singing again with pop orchestras. When she came to Toronto an interview in the paper quoted her as saying that she looked back over her life and what made her happy and she realized it was singing.

PS: I'd have a hard time making a list that didn't include Rosemary Clooney.
